Fowler murder trial delayed until summer

By Mike Morris / The Union Democrat

The trial of a Valley Springs boy accused of killing his younger sister has been delayed until this summer.

The 13-year-old brother of victim Leila Fowler, shackled at his feet, appeared in Calaveras County Superior Court on Wednesday morning for a brief hearing.

The boy - charged with second-degree murder - is accused of stabbing his 8-year-old sister to death last April.

He was arrested the following month after an extensive investigation by local, state and federal law enforcement. They were initially searching for an older man that the boy said came into their Rancho Calaveras house and stabbed Fowler.

The boy, held at a Placerville juvenile detention center since his arrest, nodded and quietly said "yes" when asked by the judge if he waived his right to a speedy trial.
