Sonora’s Russell won’t run

Chris Caskey, The Union Democrat

Sonora Mayor Hank Russell will wrap up his tenure on the City Council at the end of the year.

Russell confirmed on Monday that he will not seek a fourth term on the council, leaving at least one of two seats open in the June primary without an incumbent.

Russell is serving his 12th year on the council. He said the move will allow him to enjoy retirement, as he moved to the city in 2002 after a career as a healthcare executive and consultant.

"This time, I think it's time," said Russell. "It's been a great run and I've met a lot of great people."

Councilman Matt Hawkins will be the only incumbent in the race if he collects the signatures and completes the process to get on the ballot. James Grinnell, Mark Ferreira, George Segarini and Jim Garaventa have also pulled papers from the Tuolumne County Elections Office to run for the seats.
