Hundreds gather to honor slain demolition car driver

With songs, stories and chants of "Ricky," friends and family members of lifelong Sonora resident Rick Roberts remembered him Sunday night in front of his Mono Way garage.

Hundreds gathered for a candlelight vigil one week after the 49-year-old man was killed in his auto shop. The somber affair included words of faith and family, with those close to him also keeping alive the call for catching those responsible.

"We have a bunch of brothers and sisters here," brother Mike Roberts said to the group as they lit candles in front of the shop.

Sonora police say Roberts was shot to death on the morning of Feb. 16 on the property near his residence where he regularly worked on his demolition derby cars. Police have been investigating the apparent homicide with help from the California Department of Justice, though Sonora Police Chief Mark Stinson said late last week they have not yet identified any suspects or released many details on the crime.

This morning, Stinson said there was "nothing new" to report in the case and said it's "hard to say" if or when they will have a break. Last week, investigators were conducting interviews and following leads.

"We're still moving forward," Stinson said this morning.
