Columbia trustees set goals for school

Austen Thibault, The Union Democrat /

The Columbia Elementary School Board of Trustees discussed opening its pool, playing fields and performing arts complex to more community use in the latest of a series of goal-setting meetings on Saturday.

The district also continues to make technology upgrades, particularly to meet the needs of the new state Common Core standards.

Bids went out last week for repairs to the school's community pool. It is expected to be open over the summer - even during repairs, according to Superintendent John Pendley.

The drought may negatively affect some district plans, but isn't holding back the pool project. The idea of a community source for recreational water was well-accepted at the county level, said Pendley. Filling one pool is better than filling many pools, he said.

Bids are due in the springand construction is set to finish in August, with the intention of keeping the pool open even during repairs, Pendley said.
