Reaching for the stars: ‘American Idol’ contestant is not sheepish

By Mike Morris, The Union Democrat

As a senior at Calaveras High School, Gary Souza was voted "Most Likely to be a Rock Star."

At 22, he looks the part: wearing ripped jeans and a shark's tooth necklace - a good-luck charm that once belonged to his grandfather.

He's passionate about music: "It's almost like the reason I'm living," he said.

Souza got closer to his dreams last month when he was featured on "American Idol," the reality-singing competition on Fox television.

Not only did he make it onto the show, but a photo of him strumming his guitar has been plastered on billboards and buses to promote the show's 13th season.

Souza auditioned for "American Idol" in San Francisco last summer. He was called back for two additional rounds of screenings before he got to perform in front of celebrity judges Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez and Harry Connick Jr.
