The Jamestown Sanitary District board prevented dozens of people from becoming homeless later this month by giving their landlord until May to pay a large, outstanding sewer bill.
Jamestown landlord Stewart Hatler still must pay about $38,000 in past-due bills on 15 low-income units around Seventh Street, Ninth Avenue and Maple Alley, or else the district will disconnect those properties from the sewer.
The district previously extended his deadline from Feb. 12 to Feb. 28.
With the 90-day extension, Hatler's new deadline is May 28.
At least 40 residents living in Hatler's units would be evicted if the district is forced to cut them off from the sewer. According to building safety rules, a home immediately becomes uninhabitable when the sewer is cut off.
