Little dogs bound for Boise

By Mike Morris / The Union Democrat

Fifteen Chihuahuas boarded an airplane Monday morning in San Andreas, headed for adoption in Boise, Idaho.

The dogs were rescued a few weeks ago from a house in Glencoe.

Their out-of-state transport was a combined effort between Calaveras County Animal Services, the Calaveras Humane Society and nonprofit Wings of Rescue - a Los Angeles-based animal rescue organization.

"With such a small shelter, we had to act pretty quickly," said Henning Schreiber, the county's animal services manager.

The Idaho Humane Society offered to find homes for the dogs, but the county needed Wings of Rescue to get them there. The group claims to have helped save more than 6,200 animals who "would have been certainly put to death in our California shelters due to the pet overpopulation crisis" by flying them in private airplanes to various rescue organizations.

Pilot Steve Sweeney, a volunteer with Wings of Rescue, took a 24-minute flight early Monday from Livermore to the Calaveras County Airport in San Andreas. He helped load the Chihuahuas for their two hour, eight minute flight to Boise.
