The race for two seats on the Sonora City Council is underway, and three individuals have already shown interest since the filing period opened Monday.

According to the Tuolumne County Elections Office, Councilman Matt Hawkins has initiated paperwork to seek re-election. His seat and the one currently held by Sonora Mayor Hank Russell are up for election this year in the June 3 primary.

Along with Hawkins, former Tuolumne Utilities District director James Grinnell and Sonora resident Mike Ferreira have also pulled the paperwork for official nominations.

In Calaveras County, four people have filed their declaration of candidacy, meaning they have officially met nomination requirements and paid their filing fees, for four different positions.

Those candidates include incumbent Coroner Kevin Raggio and Michael Oliveira, candidate for District 3 Supervisor.

Calaveras County Deputy District Attorney Dana Pfeil is now an official candidate for the seat of retiring Calaveras County Superior Court Judge John Martin. For the judgeship occupied by recently-appointed Hugh Swift, San Joaquin County prosecutor Tim Healy has officially declared his candidacy.

Twenty other people in Calaveras County have taken out paperwork for a variety of offices but have not yet officially filed.
