Red Barn Museum perk up planned

By Mike Morris / The Union Democrat

The Calaveras County Board of Supervisors voiced its support Tuesday over a proposal to display old mining equipment on nearly an acre of bare land next to the Red Barn Museum.

The proposal, put forth by the Calaveras County Historical Society, involves expanding the museum complex by adding roughly 10 outdoor displays that would showcase "almost every stage of the mining process," said Dave Sanders, a volunteer who helped design the display.

"Everything we're going to use for the mining display comes from within the county," he said after Tuesday's board meeting.

The Red Barn Museum and Red Barn Annex is located at the county's Government Center at 891 Mountain Ranch Road in San Andreas. The outdoor expansion would be on a 0.8-acre lot between the museum and a walking path that goes through the government center.

The Historical Society intends to plant trees on the property in addition to adding parking, picnic tables and a gazebo.
