Stormy weekend in Lode forecast

By Alex MacLean, The Union Democrat

Wet weather in the Mother Lode will stick around through the weekend, but meteorologists say the area will need much more to offset what has been an historically dry season so far.

Snowfall over the Central Sierra in the past 24 hours ranged from 3 to 6 inches. Lower elevations received about a quarter-inch of rain. Sonora's season total to date is 4.53 inches. Average for this time of year is about 18 inches.

Wet storms off the Pacific Ocean will hit the region today through early Monday, according to the National Weather Service. A high-pressure ridgethat was blocking storms off the coast for weeks has dissipated.

Higher elevations, above 6,000 feet, could receive up to 2 feet of snow. The storms will be warmer for lower elevations of the foothills, which are expected to receive up to 4 inches of rain.

National Weather Service meteorologist George Cline said the Sierra Nevada would still be looking at low snowpack, even with the maximum amount of precipitation from this weekend's storms.
