Nearly two dozen are ready to file in Calaveras

By Mike Morris, The Union Democrat

Monday is the first day those running for office can officially declare their candidacy for the June 3 primary election.

As of late Thursday, 23 people in Calaveras County had pulled election paperwork. Candidates have been collecting signatures to offset their filing fees, which must be paid once they formally declare their candidacy.

So far, the greatest interest has been shown for two Calaveras County Superior Court judge seats.

Four candidates - Copperopolis attorney Tom Meyer, Calaveras County SuperiorCourt Commissioner Grant Barrett, Calaveras County Deputy District Attorney Dana Pfeil and San Andreas attorney Ken Foley - have pulled paperwork for the seat of retiring Judge John Martin.

The second seat - held by recently appointed Judge Hugh Swift - is being sought by Swift, Murphys attorney John Trifilo and San Joaquin County prosecutor Tim Healy.
