Post office spared for now

Chris Caskey, The Union Democrat

A plan to possibly close the small post office in downtown Sonora may have hit delays, as a formal proposal has still not been released to the public.

U.S. Postal Service spokesman Gus Ruiz told The Union Democrat on Wednesday that the agency has put a hold on posting any new closure proposals for the time being. The Postal Service was scheduled to release a formal proposal for the future of the postal station in Old Town Sonora on Stewart Street by the end of January.

"All I can tell you is it is an indefinite order as they re-evaluate all proposals to discontinue certain offices," Ruiz stated in an e-mail.

The future of that office looked grim as of last month, with local residents recently asked to answer a questionnaire on how often they use the office and for what services.

The results of those surveys were supposed to be used for the final proposal, which was likely to recommend closing the office that has seen a decline in volume and revenues in recent years.
