Sierra Views: Frank Borrego, a life of service

By Lacey Peterson / The Union Democrat

Most people who know Frank Borrego will remember him as a long-time high school Spanish teacher.

But there's more to Borrego than meets the eye.

Like: He lived through the Depression. He's a decorated veteran of WWII. And he was also a fabulous skier who taught others until he was in his 80s.

At age 92, Borrego now lives a quiet existence at Skyline Place in Sonora and enjoys spending time with his grandchildren. It's quite a change from the active life he led.

It's been 20 years since Borrego stood in front of a classroom, but former students and teachers still hold him in high regard as a mentor and inspiration.

Borrego taught at Sonora High School from 1949 to 1979, at Big Valley Christian School for four years, then at Summerville High School for eight years, before he retired in the early 1990s.

In his career, he taught leadership, Spanish and business. He also was activities director at Sonora and Summerville high schools. Borrego is in the California Association of Directors of Activities Hall of Fame.

"Frank's pretty important. He was and still is respected in the activity director community," said Steve Southard, retired Sonora High teacher.

Southard was hired at Sonora High in 1979 and said Borrego's knowledge and experience was invaluable to him when he took over the activities director position.

"I saw him as a mentor," Southard said. "He's an amazing human being."
