Tuolumne County corgis, terrier head to big NY contest

Austen Thibault, The Union Democrat /

Three Tuolumne County dogs will compete in the 138th annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show next week in New York.

Longtime handler Jeff Heim, of Jamestown, will show two corgis owned by veterinarian Wes Wittman and his wife, Maggi Wittman, of Columbia.

Heim's wife, Blossom Scott-Heim, will show her own toy Manchester terrier.

Westminster is a first for all three dogs.

The Wittmans have entered GCH CH Wind River Outlaw Jesse James and GCH CH Faerie Glen Fancy That. GCH stands for Grand Champion and CH stands for Champion, which are previously earned titles - a prerequisite to get into Westminster.

Jesse is a 2-year-old Pembroke Welsh Corgi, bred by the Wittmans. Jesse has already been named "Best in Breed" 11 times at various other American Kennel Club dog shows. He is a quintessential example of his breed, with an outgoing personality, hearty appetite and "a strong urge to herd everything that moves," according to Maggi Wittman.

Fancy is a Cardigan Welsh Corgi, who is generally more refined and polite but can hardly contain herself while waiting her turn in shows. She's been known to leap several feet into the air. Her mother was a former national champion.
