Hatler tenants face eviction

Chris Caskey, The Union Democrat

Dozens of people in Jamestown could be displaced if a large, outstanding sewer bill isn't paid by their landlord in the coming days.

Officials with the sewer provider and the county building department informed residents of 15 units late last week that their sewer will be cut off sometime between Feb. 12 and 14 if the property owner is not current on the sewer bills. According to the sanitary district, those bills total about $38,000.

The homes become immediately uninhabitable if the sewer is cut off, according to building safety rules. They will be boarded up and anyone living there will have 24 hours to leave.

That means as many as 40 people will have to find a new place to live within their largely low-income ranges. And neighborhood resident Linda Martin says a lot of them are worried about whether they will even be able to find new places or will be essentially homeless.

"Everybody here is facing losing everything," said Martin, 66. "We're the ones who are getting essentially penalized."
