Murphys restaurant makes television debut

By Mike Morris / The Union Democrat

Jami Saul, owner of Hillbillies Restaurant in Murphys, has aired her dirty laundry - and she's pleased with the results.

Hillbillies is featured in the latest episode of "Restaurant: Impossible" on the Food Network. The episode, hosted by chef Robert Irvine, premiered Wednesday night and is expected to air again Sunday evening.

"Everyone is ecstatic," Saul said Thursday. "I've felt so supported."

The episode, titled "Dirty Laundry," refers to a clothesline of Gold Rush-era clothes - similar to what Angels Camp hangs over Main Street during the Calaveras County Fair - that hung in her restaurant.

"Robert hated the clothesline," Saul said. "He just didn't get it."

In addition to improving the decor of the dining area - most notably replacing "hideous" carpet with "beautiful" hardwood floors - the show helped Saul improve her management style, she said.
