Tuolumne ramps up water saving

By Alex MacLean, The Union Democrat

Tuolumne Utilities District plans to ease customers into mandatory water conservation, as Wednesday marked the first full day restrictions were in effect.

The restrictions were enacted Tuesday night by the district's board of directors. The intent is to halve water use districtwide.

The mandate includes 15 agencies that purchase water through TUD - including the Sonora Water Co., Sonora Meadows Mutual Water Co., Muller Mutual Water Co., Twain Harte Community Service District and Twain Harte Valley Mutual Co.

Twain Harte Community Services District enacted its own mandatory restrictions Wednesday night.

TUD General Manager Tom Scesa said the district office fielded a number of calls from customers Wednesday with questions about the limits.

"Overall, I'm pleased to see people are taking it as serious as it is," he said.

District spokeswoman Lisa Westbrook said TUD is giving customers time to get familiar with the new restrictions before citing or penalizing violators.
