Longtime judge Martin retiring

By Mike Morris / The Union Democrat

Calaveras County Superior Court Judge John Martin announced Tuesday that he will retire at the end of his term in January 2015.

The announcement threw a curve into this year's election campaign.

To distinguish the two judge seats up for election in the June primary, the Calaveras County Election's Office assigned Martin's seat as Department 1 and recently-appointed Judge Hugh Swift's seat as Department 2.

As of Tuesday evening, Copperopolis attorney Tom Meyer and Grant Barrett, current Calaveras County Superior Court commissioner, have pulled papers for Department 1.
