Calaveras looks to save oak trees

Public Meeting: Calaveras County Board of Supervisors, 9 a.m. Tuesday, Board Chambers, 891 Mountain Ranch Road, San Andreas.

The Calaveras County Board of Supervisors is scheduled to vote Tuesday on whether to preserve nearly four acres of county land to compensate for the removal oak trees to build the new Calaveras County Criminal Justice Center.

The 3.75 acres - to the east of the Calaveras County Government Center in San Andreas - features "very high quality oak trees," said county planner Debra Lewis.

In addition to setting aside the land for oak tree conservation, $35,820 has been deposited in the Calaveras County Criminal Justice Center Oak Tree Mitigation Fund. That money will eventually go to the California Oak Woodland Conservation Fund with the goal to acquire oak woodland for preservation.

"With the implementation of these two measures, the mitigation requirements … will be satisfied," according to county documents.

The new Calaveras County Sheriff's Office is expected to open by mid-March with the Calaveras County Jail to follow in the spring.
