Angels delays vote on rezoning

By Mike Morris / The Union Democrat

The Angels Camp City Council wants more information from city staff before voting on whether to rezone 86 downtown parcels and create a "historical commercial district."

Council members discussed the rezone at length Tuesday night, and voted to continue the discussion to the council's Feb. 4 meeting.

"All of the uses (downtown) are consistent, pretty much, with what the historical commercial uses are," said Planning Director David Hanham.

The rezone would bring the city in compliance with Angels Camp's General Plan, which the council adopted nearly five years ago. The plan lists three different commercial districts along the Highway 49 corridor: historical, community and shopping center.

California law states a city's zoning ordinance must be consistent with its General Plan, Hanham said.

In 2010, the community commercial district, which features small business and retail centers in the center of the city, was rezoned. The following year, the council rezoned the shopping center district at the northern end of the city.

It took longer for the historical commercial district to come before the council because it involved creating a whole new zone, Hanham said.
