Sonora Councilman in hot water

By Alex MacLean / The Union Democrat

The Sonora Police Department announced Friday that it recently completed an investigation into allegations that Sonora City Councilman Matt Hawkins illegally dumped trash in a local business's large metal trash bin.

Sonora Police Chief Mark Stinson said the manager of the business, which he declined to identify, filed the initial complaint against Hawkins.

The matter has been forwarded to the Tuolumne County District Attorney's Office for review at the request of the business, Stinson said.

The District Attorney's Office had not assigned the case to a prosecutor as of Friday afternoon, when the Sonora police announcement was made.

Stinson declined to release anymore details regarding the investigation and referred all questions to the District Attorney's Office.

Unlawful dumping of trash constitutes a theft of utility services, a misdemeanor. If convicted, punishment can include up to a year in county jail.

Hawkins was elected to the Sonora City Council in 2010. His term expires this year.
