Columbia Park looking for docents

Union Democrat staff

Columbia State Historic Park is seeking volunteers to train as park docents to teach history to visitors, among other things.

The park is accepting applications now through Jan. 15.

Trained docents wear historic costumes, teach history to visitors - including through reenactment - staff exhibits and assist with events.

Volunteers are asked to commit to eight hours a month or 96 hours throughout the year, with varying shifts throughout the year.

The training will begin the last week of January and will run for five consecutive Saturdays.

The training is free, but participants are asked to purchase learning materials if they can. The park will pay if necessary.

Costume loans may be available.

The current docent program has more than 60 active docents and an additional 100 volunteers throughout the state who help at special events.

The park depends on its volunteers to staff some buildings and to remain open for the public, said Danielle Gerhart, a state park interpreter and volunteer coordinator.

For more information or for an application, call 588-9128 or visit the Columbia Museum at 11255 Jackson St.
