Sing, Bean Feed Friday

By Alex MacLean / The Union Democrat

Get ready for an afternoon of free food and song in downtown Sonora, as this Friday marks the return of the Pop Hudson Memorial Christmas Sing and Galen "Mut" Mutzner's Bean Feed.

The Union Democrat staff will kick off the 34th annual edition of the community caroling event with "O Come, All Ye Faithful" at 12:45 p.m. on the steps of the Historic Tuolumne County Courthouse on Green Street.

Other groups leading songs are asked to assemble in Courthouse Square at 12:30 p.m. The Sing will continue until about 1:30 p.m., rain or shine.

This Friday also marks the 26th year that Mutzner, 87, has served homemade beans, menudo, quesadillas and garlic bread to hundreds of people on the same day as the Sing.

"It turned out to be something fun that people talk about," Mutzner said about continuing the tradition.

Mutzner said he's already purchased more than 100 pounds of beans, 5 gallons of whole tomatoes, 2 gallons of tomato sauce and more to serve the hungry masses Friday.

Keyboard player Larry Kram and sound man Richard Sholer will volunteer their time to oversee sound for the event, which Sholer has been a part of for the past 20 years.

Other agencies and organizations scheduled to lead songs at the Sing include the Summerville Parent Nursery School, Sonora Regional Medical Center, Tuolumne County Behavioral Health Department, U.S. Forest Service, Baseline Fire Camp inmates, Tuolumne County Office of Education, Tuolumne County Association of Realtors, Jazz@8 choir, Amador-Tuolumne Community Action Agency and YES Partnership, City of Sonora and Tuolumne County government staff and officials, Tuolumne County Arts Alliance, Mother Lode Art Association and Sonora-area service clubs.
