East Sonora Bypass opens

Austen Thibault, The Union Democrat /

The East Sonora Bypass has opened.

Caltrans hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony at 1 p.m. today, after which the bypass became accessible to motorists. Longtime Sonora City Councilman Ron Stearn was the first to travel the road, with Caltrans Director Malcolm Dougherty as his passenger.

The bypass now constitutes Highway 108 for that portion of thoroughfare from Peaceful Oak Road to Via Este Road.

It towers up to 110 feet over the road that will now be Mono Way.

The bypass opened several months ahead of schedule due to favorable weather.
