Woman in 'stable condition' after Burson shooting

Union Democrat staff /

A Burson woman who survived a shooting at her home Wednesday night, which left one person dead and another in custody, was in stable condition at a Modesto hospital on Friday, the Calaveras County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

Britney McGhee, 20, was shot about 10:15 p.m. at the home she lived at with her grandparents on the 5700 block of Amos Lane. She was taken to Doctor's Medical Center in Modesto for treatment of critical injuries. Her grandmother, Charity Ford, 56, is the accused shooter.

McGhee's step-grandfather, Randolph Alan Ford, 52, was found dead at the scene. An autopsy showed he died of shock and hemorrhage resulting from five gunshots to the upper torso, according to the news release.

Detectives found two small caliber handguns at the scene.

McGhee's 5-month-old son, who was at the home at the time of the incident, was unharmed.

The news release said the alleged shooting apparently followed a domestic argument between the Randolph Ford and his wife, who has been cooperative with detectives.

Charity Ford was being held Friday at Calaveras County Jail on suspicion of first-degree murder, attempted murder and child endangerment. Her bail was set at $3 million.
