Confidence Inn burns

The historic Confidence Inn was damaged this morning in a structure fire.

The fire was reported at 5:30 a.m. by a motorist driving by the business, 23370 Highway 108 in Confidence, according to Incident Commander Brent Berry.

The Inn's tavern and former restaurant area were damaged, but "salvaged," said Berry.

When he arrived, he said, heavy smoke and fire were coming from the back of the building. He said the firefighters made an "interior attack."

"They made a good stop on the fire," he said.

The building didn't appear to be occupied at the time.

The Inn was established in 1926. Despite the name, it has not functioned as an inn for several decades. The restaurant hasn't been open for several years.

In its heyday, the Confidence Inn was the only operating business in the town of Confidence, a once-thriving gold mining area, now with a population of about 50.

The fire's cause was undetermined this morning.

Richard Pereria, son of the owner Patricia Clement, was on scene this morning assessing the damage.

A bus driver for the Tuolumne County Transit, he said he was working when his coworkers radioed him to tell him about the fire.

Clement has owned and operated the business since April 1, 1994.

Cal Fire, Tuolumne County Fire, Mi-Wuk Village Fire and Twain Harte Fire responded.
