Angels birthday celebration canceled

The Rim Fire has blown out the candles on Angels Camp's birthday cake.

Angels Camp Gold Rush Day, a street fair scheduled for Saturday to commemorate the city's 165th birthday, has been postponed until Oct. 19.

The event, scheduled to take place in downtown Angels Camp, was cancelled "due to the poor air quality resulting from the Rim Fire and our concern for the health of our residents and visitors as well as our vendors, entertainers and volunteers," organizers said.

The postponement delays Sherri Smith's plans to create Angels Camp's memorable birthday cake - very likely the largest Rice Krispies Treat the Mother Lode has ever seen.

Smith ordered 200 pounds of marshmallow and 128 pounds of the toasted rice cereal - combined with butter, vanilla and salt - to create a giant mining cart. Fondant will be used to create the cart's straps and handles before being brushed with Belgian dark chocolate.

The cart will be filled with crumbled freeze-dried chocolate chip ice cream decorated with metallic spray and 23-carat edible gold.

"It's engineered to be a little larger than life-sized," said Smith, owner of CAMPS restaurant at Greenhorn Creek Resort.

The birthday cake - large enough to feed 1,000 people - is being donated by CAMPS.

"I really love to make specialty cakes," Smith said. "I thought it was a good opportunity to do something unique and edible."

The cake was to be created today and Friday, and wheeled out into the street Saturday so the crowd could sing "Happy Birthday."

Now, the cake - designed to look like mining carts outside of the Angels Camp Museum and Angels Fire House - will be created in October, Smith said.

In advance of Angels Camp Gold Rush Day, the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution at Tuesday's meeting recognizing Angels Camp's 165th birthday.
