Rim Fire: Gov. Brown announces state of emergency

California Gov. Jerry Brown has declared a state of emergency in Tuolumne County because of the Rim Fire.

Brown's office released the announcement this afternoon, setting up state and possible federal assistance for the local response and recovery. The almost week-old fire continues to grow along and around the Tuolumne River canyon outside of Groveland and had scorched more than 53,000 acres as of this morning.

"The circumstances of this wildfire, by reason of their magnitude, are or are likely to be beyond the control of the services, personnel, equipment and facilities of any single county, city and county, or city and require the combined forces of a mutual aid region or regions to combat," Brown stated in the emergency proclamation.

Tuolumne County leaders requested a state of emergency on Wednesday, stating that the blaze is more than the current available resources can handle. More than 1,000 people are battling the blaze as of this morning.

A state of emergency opens the door to more firefighting resources on the front line, and it can also lead to state and federal aid for response activities like evacuation centers and loss of property.
