Logging Museum display swiped

A tiny version of a California icon went missing from the Sierra Nevada Logging Museum in White Pines.

A handmade replica of Sutter's Mill, famed for its proximity to the 1848 discovery that launched the California Gold Rush, was apparently stolen sometime between the museum's closure Friday afternoon and its re-opening Saturday morning from outside the museum entrance.

A call to the Calaveras County Office reported it missing at 12:10 p.m. on Saturday.

"We don't know who would steal that thing. it's just unique. I don't think you can sell it," said Ginny Kafka, the museum's vice president. "It'd be really nice if the word gets out there and everybody's mad at whoever took it and maybe he'll bring it back."

A $250 reward is being offered for the replica mill's return.

"It sat there for eight or nine years … a man that passed away gave it to us, did it for us so that makes it even worse," Kafka said. "Someone said Bill Dyer is turning in his grave."

Anyone with information related to the incident is asked to call the Calaveras County Sheriff's Office at 754-6500.
