Strike up the band

The Gold Country Music Camp, which trains local junior high and high schoolers, will host a concert at 6 p.m. Friday in the Columbia Elementary School gym.

The performance will include folk music, marches and popular songs prepared during the five-day camp that started Monday. It will also feature students playing ukuleles, drums and even chairs as instruments.

Seventy-two students are participating in the Gold Country Music Camp this year, said Sonora High band teacher Yvonne Denton, one of the camp's music instructors. That's more than the 52 who took part last summer.

The camp's counselors are 20 Sonora High students and alumni, many of whom have returned year after year. Several full-time teachers, a part-time teacher, an accompanist and a parent volunteer are on hand.

Though students are rehearsing intensively, they're also finding time to unwind. They even had a water balloon fight Tuesday afternoon.
