A plane crashed Sunday at Pine Mountain Lake Airport, destroying the aircraft and injuring the two people aboard.

The single-engine plane was coming in for a landing about 12:30 p.m. when it got off track about halfway down the runway and clipped a tree, according to a statement from Sgt. Jim Oliver of the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Office. The reason for the accident is not known.

The pilot and passenger, who were not identified, were taken by ambulance to an area hospital.

Details on their injuries were not available.

Oliver said the Sheriff's Office will hand over the investigation to the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board.
