Heat wave on way to Lode

Austen Thibault, The Union Democrat

Summer heat will return full-force this weekend with near-record triple-digit temperatures.

The National Weather Service said the heat wave this weekend and early next week will bring danger to medically vulnerable groups. The service urges children, the elderly, and people with chronic ailments limit outdoor activity.

Pet owners should also keep an eye on their animals.

Four days straight of triple-digit temperatures are forecast, coupled with high humidity left over from rain earlier this week.

While Friday's high temperature is forecast at about 99 degrees in the Mother Lode, Saturday and Sunday are each slated to reach 100 degrees.

Monday's high is forecast to be 102, and Tuesday's 103.

Overnight lows for this period will be in the low to mid-60s.

The average temperature for the period of June 29 through July 2 is 94 degrees, according to AccuWeather. The average low is 60.

National Weather Service meteorologist Mike Smith said humidity could reach 20 percent. Normal would be in the single digits to low teens.

The heat wave could also bring thunderstorms to the High Sierra, likely only above 6,000 feet elevation on Monday and Tuesday, as monsoonal moisture piles up against the eastern Sierra.

Mid-week temperatures will begin dropping by a few degrees, and next weekend is forecast as cooler, but still possibly above average.
