Sonora’s Monday rainfall bests historic high

Austen Thibault, The Union Democrat /

Monday's rainfall broke the daily record for the date in Sonora.

Total recorded rainfall yesterday reached 0.23 inch.

The previous record for June 24, set in 1952, was 0.05 inch. Records have been kept at The Union Democrat since 1906.

Rainfall totals varied throughout several locations through the region.

Twain Harte received 1.16 inches, Quartz received 0.1 inch and Altaville received 0.23 inch.

The unseasonable rain continues today. The chance of rain in western Tuolumne County is 40 percent, and in the Calaveras County foothills it is 50 percent.

At higher elevations, the chance of rainfall rises.

To beat the record today, rainfall would have to exceed 0.11 inch, a record set in 2010. However, less is predicted.

The rain comes near the end of the weather year, which closes June 30.

It brings the season-to-date rainfall totals - which have been lagging in this dry year - closer to the annual average.

This year's season-to-date rainfall total is now 21.41 inches in Sonora, still behind the average total of 32.16 inches by the end of June.

Meteorologists warn that the recent rain will only temporarily suppress fire dangers and that this fire season remains especially dangerous.
