More abuse charges filed

A man accused of assaulting his 4-month-old son faces four more child abuse charges and again had his arraignment postponed for gathering of evidence.

Shaheed Jameel Hassan Williams, 25, of Sonora, appeared in court Friday morning but did not enter a plea. His Tuolumne County Superior Court arraignment was continued again to July 12. He was first scheduled for arraignment on June 9, but that was continued to last Friday because sheriff's reports were not ready.

Public defender Clay Bedford asked that arraignment be delayed again because of new charges and new evidence.

The new charges are four additional felony child abuse charges of inflicting corporal injury to a child for four new and separate incidences between May 13 and May 31.

The original charge - assault on a child resulting in a coma - still stands and is estimated to have occurred June 1.

The new charges are based on new evidence from either medical personnel, police interviews or both, according to District Attorney Mike Knowles, who said he could not provide more details because of the ongoing investigation by law enforcement.

The child was still in critical condition Friday afternoon in an Oakdale hospital, said Knowles. The boy was previously predicted not to survive, which would harshen charges.

Judge Eleanor Provost on June 9 approved a restraining order against Williams to keep him from contacting the infant if he is released from jail.

Tuolumne County Sheriff's detectives arrested Williams on June 5 at Children's Hospital and Research Center Oakland, after days of interviews with him and Sonora and Oakland medical personnel.

He was booked into Tuolumne County Jail on charge of assault on a child resulting in a coma or paralysis. He remains jailed in lieu of $500,000 bail.

His arraignment is scheduled for 8:15 a.m. in Department 4.
