Man accused of baby abuse

Authorities have arrested a Sonora man on suspicion of child abuse after his 4-month-old son was hospitalized over the weekend with apparent brain injuries, according to the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Office.

Shaheed Jameel Hassan Williams, 25, was taken into custody Wednesday at an Oakland hospital and booked into Tuolumne County Jail on a charge of assault on a child resulting in a coma or paralysis.

About 6 p.m. Saturday, Sheriff's Office dispatchers received a 911 call that the infant was not breathing and was turning blue. The child was transported by ambulance to Sonora Regional Medical Center.

According to Sheriff's Office dispatch logs, the alleged abuse occurred at Williams' home on the 12800 block of Chukar Circle.

While trying to stabilize the infant, Sonora hospital staff discovered bleeding in his brain. They suspected child abuse was the cause of the injuries and contacted the Sheriff's Office.

The baby was transported to Children's Hospital and Research Center Oakland, where he remained in critical condition Thursday.

A sheriff's deputy responded toSonora Regional Medical Center and spoke with the parents and medical staff. Sheriff's detectives responded to both hospitals for further investigation.

Detectives arrested Williams after days of interviews and consulting with medical personnel.

The Sheriff's Office said the investigation is ongoing.

According to Williams' Facebook page, he has been working as server at a Sonora restaurant and in the food services department at a nearby Christian summer camp.

Union Democrat archives show he attended Don Pedro High School, where he played basketball.

He majored in sociology at California Baptist University in Riverside, according to his Facebook page.

The District Attorney's Office had not yet reached a charging decision Thursday afternoon because it had not received all of the Sheriff's Office reports on the incident.

Williams will be arraigned today in Tuolumne County Superior Court.

He remained in custody this morning, with bail set at $500,000.
