Fair, jump this weekend

Union Democrat staff /

The 86th annual Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee will continue today through Sunday at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds in Angels Camp.

Frog jumping contests are held daily, with the International Frog Jump Finals beginning at 3 p.m. Sunday.

This year's theme is "Country Roots and Cowboy Boots."

The Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee is one of the longest running events in the State of California. Its earliest roots date back to 1893 - held that year in Copperopolis - before finding a permanent home outside of Angels Camp.

Added to the entertainment lineup this year are some new acts and competitions. Tonight, the arena will be ablaze with motocross. Jimmy Fitzpatrick will lead the pack and riders will display their jumps - usually covering more than 60 feet - from a metal take-off ramp to a metal landing ramp.

Headlining the musical lineup at 8 p.m. Saturday will be The Farm, country music stars from Nashville. Band members Nick Hoffman, Damien Horne and Krista Marie are deeply rooted in country music but put their own distinct spin on the interlocking harmonies that have been an important thread in country's history, from the Sons of the Pioneers through Lady Antebellum.

A variety of musical acts also will appear on the lawn and ranchhouse stages. Performers will include Danny Elzig, country; Route 88, classic rock; Dyemusica, reggae; Big Earl, blues; Crosseyed, blues and classic rock; Sly Fox Band, country; Keno and Nicole, rock and roll favorites; Grover Anderson, independent, and Plan B, classic rock.

Other entertainment will include Doctor Solar's Medicine Show, Mountain Motion jugglers, arm wrestling competition, Calaveras Idol contest and tug of war competition.

Antique tractor pulls will be part of the arena show on Sunday afternoon.

Stage and arena entertainment is free with the price of admission.

Children 5 and younger are admitted free throughout the event. Ages 12 and younger are free today as part of "Heritage Days," while adults pay $8 for entry ($12 on Sunday)

Children ages 6 to 12 are $5 on Saturday and $8 on Sunday.
