A husband and wife were arrested on assault and conspiracy charges early Saturday after a Murphys bar fight escalated.

About 12:23 a.m., Calaveras County Sheriff's deputies responded to a residence on the 100 block of Rufe Lane in Vallecito for a report of an argument.

Sheriff's Office dispatchers also received several 911 calls reporting gunshots in the area.

Deputies contacted four people at the home who said Steven Michael Scharf, 25, and Jana Maile Scharf, 24, both of Douglas Flat, had just left the area.

The people at the home, all of Angels Camp, told deputies that while they were at a bar on the 100 block of Big Trees Road in Murphys, one of them got into a fight with Steven Scharf.

When the Angels Camp residents left the bar, the Scharfs allegedly followed them to the Vallecito home.

The Scharfs reportedly drove to their home on the 1800 block of Sugar Pine Way, switched cars, retrieved a handgun and shotgun and returned to the Rufe Lane residence.

Steven Scharf exited the car and got into an argument with one of the people from the bar, the Sheriff's Office said.

Jana Scharf reportedly stood outside the car, pointing a shotgun toward the ground.

A woman told deputies that Steven Scharf pointed a handgun at her. When she knocked it out of the way, a round was discharged, the Sheriff's Office said. No one was hit.

The Scharfs fled the scene, and deputies and Angels Camp police officers were unable to locate them in the immediate area, the Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies found a spent shell casing from a Glock .40 caliber handgun at the scene.

About 1:20 a.m., while deputies were still investigating the incident, Angels Camp police spotted the Scharfs' vehicle pulling up to the Sugar Pine Drive residence.

Officers detained the couple and seized the firearms from the vehicle.

The Sheriff's Office said Jana Scharf admitted to the events while being interviewed.

The Scharfs were booked into Calaveras County Jail, each on felony charges of assault with a firearm and conspiracy to commit crime.
