Calaveras jail nearly complete

The Calaveras County Jail and Sheriff's Office project in San Andreas stands at 81 percent complete through work done in March, according to a monthly status report by construction management firm Kitchell CEM.

The $59 million project is scheduled for completion on June 18. Builder Flintco Pacific of Sacramento estimated last month construction is running about three weeks behind, but that has been trimmed to 17 days in the past month.

Further increases in weekend and shift work have been implemented this month to try to get back on schedule, the report stated.

About $34.7 million of the construction contract with Flintco has been spent, with just shy of $8 million remaining on the agreement.

Work done in March includes completion of cells on the jail's mezzanine level and setup for installation of electricity and plumbing. Light-gauge metal framing continues this month on the first floor of the jail, solar panels have been installed on the roof, and exterior painting has begun on the west side.

Windows have been installed on the Sheriff's Office, and metal stud framing continues on the high roof canopy. Upcoming work includes installation of elevators at the jail and interior painting on its first floor.

More than $30 million for the jail and Sheriff's Office project is collected from sale of Measure J bonds approved by voters in 2007.

An additional $26.4 million comes from Assembly Bill 900 funds allocated by the state with the remainder largely accumulated interest and payments from the courts for shared infrastructure on the adjacent projects.

Tuolumne County is also seeking AB 900 funds for construction of a new jail. The county missed out on the latest round of state funding but is first in line if another county forfeits its grant dollars because it is unable to use them.

The jail would replace an outdated downtown facility near downtown Sonora and join a new courthouse, sheriff's office and juvenile detention center at the new Law and Justice Center site on Old Wards Ferry Road.
