Two men were arrested Thursday in Angels Camp on auto theft and drug charges.

About 9 p.m., an Angels Camp police officer pulled over a Nissan pickup truck on the 100 block of South Main Street.

The officer discovered that the Nissan, which displayed license plates registered to a Ford, was reported stolen out of Modesto in December.

The officer detained its occupants, Joseph A. Alvitre, 26, of Tuolumne, and John R. Blackwell, 26, of Stockton.

The men were also in possession of tools commonly used to commit burglaries, a replica nickel finish semi-automatic pistol and an expandable baton, police said.

A police dog was called to the scene and revealed narcotics concealed in the truck, officers said. More than a half-ounce of methamphetamine and two grams of black tar heroin in baggies reportedly were hidden in a seat.

Alvitre was booked into Calaveras County Jail on suspicion of possession of stolen property; possession, sales and transportation of narcotics; possession of burglary tools; possession of narcotic paraphernalia and possession of a billy club.

Blackwell was booked on charges related to vehicle theft; possession, sales and transportation of narcotics; possession of burglary tools and possession of a billy club.
