Soulsbyville, Twain Harte could share Winfield

Brenna Swift, The Union Democrat

Twain Harte-Long Barn Union School District will decide this week on whether to share a superintendent with Soulsbyville School District.

Soulsbyville Superintendent Jeff Winfield would divide his time between the two districts under such an arrangement.

Twain Harte-Long Barn's current superintendent, John Keiter, is also the superintendent for Summerville Union High School District. Keiter is retiring from both districts at the end of this year.

Summerville High is screening applicants for its own full-time superintendent position, he said.

Soulsbyville is a larger school district than Twain Harte-Long Barn. At the time of an enrollment report earlier this year, it had about 485 students. Twain Harte-Long Barn enrolled 280.

Twain Harte no longer has the resources to hire its own full-time superintendent, said school board president Tracie Walters.

"Saving money … is where we're at," Walters said. "Working with another school district we really believe in is just a win-win."

Winfield said he was "very excited" about the prospect of working for Twain Harte-Long Barn.

"They have a great community and a great school," he said. "A lot of the people there, I already know."

Winfield is a longtime Tuolumne County resident. He attended Curtis Creek Elementary School, Sonora High School and Columbia College.

He started as a teacher at Soulsbyville in 1991, then took a position at Hughson High School as dean of students.

He came back to Soulsbyville as a vice principal, moved up to principal and became superintendent in 2006.

Winfield's salary at Soulsbyville this year is $100,020; Keiter's is $207,000. Keiter said the salary Winfield would get as a shared superintendent is still being worked out.

Both the Summerville High and Twain Harte-Long Barn school boards must sign off on the agreement to share superintendents. Each school district is set to meet Thursday evening.
