Oaks, trail on agenda in Angels

PUBLIC MEETING: Angels Camp City Council, 6 p.m. Tuesday, Joe Carley Memorial Firehouse, 1404 Vallecito Road.

Preservation of heritage oaks and other valuable trees will be a key topic at the Angels Camp City Council meeting on Tuesday night.

The council is considering changes to the tree preservation ordinance, an issue that has been in discussions for years by the city's Planning Commission.

Beloved old trees have been a lightning rod for controversy before in the city, where in 2011, a last-ditch effort by a state construction project manager and local residents saved a 36-inch oak marked for removal as part of the Cal Fire Altaville station remodel project.

The city is also expected to approve a grant application through the Federal Lands Access Program to begin construction of the southern reach of the Angels Creek Trail.

When completed, the trail is expected to extend 5.1 miles and be open to pedestrians and bicyclists.

The estimated cost of a full build-out of the trail is about $4.4 million, which the city expects to accumulate through the years via state and federal grant funding.
