Mid-week rain forecast for foothills

Union Democrat staff

Rain and seasonable temperatures are forecast this week, following last week's sun and record-tying temperatures.

The National Weather Service has issued a "Special Weather Statement" for the Mother Lode warning about the quick change of weather, with the new rain possibly leading to more traffic accidents and travel delays with possible chain requirements for higher elevations.

Snow levels are expected to remain high, 6,800 feet dropping to 5,900 feet Wednesday night. Little or no snow accumulation is expected for the area, but the NWS cautions that more snow could fall.

Last Wednesday, Sonora met the record temperature for the date with a 78-degree day, which was set in 1959. This is the highest number on record since 1931, when the California Department to Forestry and Fire Protection started keeping temperature and precipitation records. Thursday was 1 degree under the record of 77, set in 1934.

Tomorrow brings a 20 percent chance of rain in Sonora and Angels Camp, with temperatures remaining in the mid-60s. The chance of rain will increase to 90 percent overnight, with accumulation of 0.25 to 0.50 inch possible. The low temperature will be around 44.

Wednesday, the chance of precipitation is 90 percent, decreasing to 40 percent overnight, with a daytime high near 60 and low about 37.
