Slim holds wide lead in Town Marshal race

Lenore Rutherford, The Union Democrat

There is still time to get your vote in for the Mother Lode Roundup's Honorary Town Marshal - but not much.

Clip-out ballots can be found in today's Union Democrat, and it's OK to make copies and get all of your friends to vote for your favorite candidate

The only ballot box is in the newspaper's lobby at 84 S. Washington St. in downtown Sonora. The deadline for voting is 5 p.m. today, when the office closes for the weekend.

As of 3 p.m. Thursday, Slim Edwards led with 65 votes. He's a longtime Tuolumne County resident who often donates his time and heavy construction equipment for community projects and is known as a mentor to many.

Dave Crocker is in second place with 42 votes. He is a longtime educator, known for his community service and has been instrumental in renovating sports fields at the Sonora Dome on Barretta Street.

Zane Orr, a longtime cowboy, horseshoer and stagecoach builder, was in third place with 35 votes.

Others with ballots in the box were Bill Dunlavy, Tony Ybarro, Sharon Marovich, Larry Cope, Max Kernaghan, Bob Leslie and Carlo De Ferrari,

The Honorary Town Marshal title was created in 2000 to honor the late Edward "Wimpy" Jones. The winner of the 2013 election will receive a badge from the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Posse and join the Mother Lode Roundup queen and grand marshal in leading the May 11 Roundup Parade along Washington Street.

The race is one of many events leading up to Tuolumne County's biggest yearly event, the annual Mother Lode Roundup Parade and Rodeo on Mother's Day Weekend.

Roundup weekend includes two full days of rodeo at the Mother Lode Fairgrounds, the Saturday morning parade up Washington Street in Sonora, a Saturday night dance and Sunday morning Mother's Day breakfast.
