Highway 49 wreck called DUI

A Mountain Ranch man was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving following an injury crash Tuesday on Highway 49 in San Andreas.

The crash occurred at Carol Kennedy Road, between Angels Camp and San Andreas, about 3:30 p.m.

Joseph Ciolino, 61, was driving a 2006 Ford Escape north on Highway 49 about 45 mph and approached a slow-moving big-rig from behind. He attempted to pass the truck then swerved back into the northbound lane when he saw another car was already in the southbound lane attempting to pass Ciolino and the big-rig.

Ciolino overcorrected and lost control of the car, which ended up crossing the southbound lane and going up an embankment. The Ford then flipped over, landing on its roof and blocking the highway.

Ciolino was taken to Mark Twain Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries, then was arrested on suspicion of DUI.

A passenger in his car, Linda James, 67, of Sheep Ranch, also suffered minor injuries and was taken to Mark Twain.

A second passenger in the Ford, Harlene Ciolino, 61, also of Mountain Ranch, was uninjured, according to the CHP report.

The incident temporarily blocked both lanes on Highway 49.
