Teen hurt in car v. ped accident

A Twain Harte teen was injured Friday night after he was hit by a car on Highway 108.

About 7:33 p.m., Christopher Rios, 15, attempted to activate the pedestrian signal at the Soulsbyville Road traffic light so he could cross the highway from north to south, according to California Highway Patrol.

When the lights didn't cycle, he started to run across the street, the CHP said.

Sally Kim, 53, of San Mateo, was driving her Mercedes east on Highway 108 about 35 mph when she approached the traffic light, the CHP said.

Kim told officers she saw Rios suddenly enter her path and was unable to stop in time. She struck him with the front, right side of her vehicle and he was thrown in a southerly direction, the CHP said.

According to the CHP, Rios saw the vehicle approaching but still crossed the street because he believed he had the right-of-way.

Rios was transported by ambulance to Sonora Regional Medical Center with major injuries.

The CHP said he had a compound fracture to his right leg and abrasions and lacerations to his face.

He was in good condition at the hospital Monday afternoon.

Kim was wearing a seat belt and was unharmed.
