Three people were arrested and 10 were cited after allegedly participating in a cockfight at a Burson home on Friday night.

Residents of the home, Randolph Lee Lumactod, 25, and Luis Padilla Jr., 53, were arrested on suspicion of felony charges of animal cruelty and cockfighting.

Another man, David Socrates Valdez, 29, of North Highlands, was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor charges of public intoxication, being under the influence of drugs and possession of drugs.

Ten of the estimated 35 to 45 spectators were cited for suspicion of animal cruelty.

About 8:30 p.m. Friday, the Calaveras County Sheriff's Office received a report of a possible cockfight at a residence on the 14500 block of Hunter Road.

Upon arrival, deputies saw a man holding a flashlight while standing outside a large shop building on the property.

Deputies approached the shop and detained numerous spectators who reportedly attempted to flee the scene.

The deputies and Calaveras County Animal Services officers located cockfighting paraphernalia inside the shop. The items included fighting cages, gaffs, gaff holders, stopwatches, weights, books and clubs.

Also inside the shop were three black garbage bags containing 18 dead birds and a bag containing 4.5 grams of marijuana, according to the Sheriff's Office.

The shop also contained a snack bar area where food and alcohol was apparently being sold, the Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies confiscated 39 live birds from the property and turned them over to Animal Services.

Lumactod and Padilla remained in Calaveras County Jail this morning in lieu of $78,750 bail and are scheduled to appear in Superior Court this afternoon for arraignment.

Valdez was being held without bail this morning on an immigration hold and out-of-county warrant.
