Arnold gets water back after line break

Sean Janssen, The Union Democrat /

Crews repaired a break in a water main Tuesday that left hundreds of Arnold customers without water for much of the day.

Two separate sections of a 12-inch main transmission line were affected, according to Bill Perley, director of utility services and engineering for Calaveras County Water District, which serves most of the Arnold area.

The break occurred about 7 a.m. near the former Meadowmont Golf Course, Perley said.

Crews worked into the afternoon to make repairs while an estimated 300 to 500 customers went without water in much of downtown Arnold and the Mill Woods and Lilac Park subdivisions.

Perley said it appeared the pipe had been nicked by a backhoe doing work in the area as many as 20 years ago. The exposed metal on the concrete-lined pipe slowly corroded.

"It's not the first time that type of thing has happened," he said. "Today's just the day it decided to give up."

Water service was restored about 4:15 p.m. and the system was still re-pressurizing about an hour later, Perley said.

"We got a good crew," he said. "Obviously we wanted to jump on top of this thing right away."

No water meant no ability to do business at Susie's Diner on Oak Court in downtown Arnold.

"We had to close as of 9 o'clock," said Bob Huntsinger, who owns the restaurant with his wife Susie. "We had to turn away a lot of customers. It'll do a little bit of a hit. Any time you have to close the doors for a day, that's a hit."

All in all, Huntsinger seemed to take it in stride however.

"It's beyond their (CCWD) control," he said. "Sometimes stuff happens. That's the way it is."

Huntsinger said he could not remember another water outage affecting the business, adding that power outages are a more common disruption to business during the winter months.
