Calaveras High looks at theater

PUBLIC MEETING: Calaveras Unified School District Board of Trustees, 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Mokelumne Hill Elementary School Multipurpose Room, 8350 Highway 26, Mokelumne Hill.

The Calaveras Unified School District Board of Trustees is set to vote Tuesday on whether a performing arts center should be built at Calaveras High School, following months of discussion on whether the project is financially feasible.

Superintendent Mark Campbell recommends the board approve the construction of the arts center for the estimated cost of $5.4 million, but only if an insurance company working with the district approves its financing plan.

If the financing plan falls through, that would send trustees back to the drawing board to discuss other options, Campbell said.

At issue is a gap between the money remaining from the $13.5 million Measure A, passed by district voters in 2006, and the money needed to build the arts center.

Campbell said the financing plan waiting on approval would allow the district to bridge the gap without incurring debt.

If the plan falls through, another option would involve starting over with a less-expensive theater design. A third would allow the district to draft a smaller list of projects for bond measure money.

Also at Tuesday's meeting, trustees will consider approving early retirement incentives to cut staff. Campbell said his goal is to reduce staff by six teachers.
