County to sell default property

Tuolumne County is seeing a bump in properties facing tax foreclosures this year, according to the county Treasurer and Tax Collector's Office.

On Tuesday, the county Board of Supervisors approved a list of properties set to be sold at auction because the property owners are five years delinquent on their tax bills.

Del Hodges, the county treasurer and tax collector, said after the meeting that the 118 properties on the list are "a few more" than previous years.

"I don't think we've ever had more than 100," Hodges said.

Most of the properties listed showed less than $10,000 owed, according to county records. The county puts properties up for auction after the property owner fails to pay taxes for five years. The county uses an online auction service called and sets a minimum bid that includes the amount of taxes owed.

Hodges said property owners can pay the amount owed in full and get their properties out of the auction up to 24 hours before the auction opens. However, by the time they get to this point, it's too late to set up a payment plan or alternative payment options, he said.

This year's auction is set for May 11 through 14.

"The only thing they can do now is pay everything in full," Hodges said.

One notable property on the list is Dardanelle Resort. The high country resort, located on Highway 108, is currently up for sale, according to the resort website. The minimum bid listed in county documents for the resort is $73,000.

Messages left for the resort owners by The Union Democrat were not returned as of Tuesday afternoon, though Hodges said he has been in contact with resort representatives regarding the outstanding bill.

Local landlord Stewart Hatler has almost 50 parcels listed as well, with outstanding bills all less than $10,000

Hodges said he will likely re-list unsold properties at a lower rate. To view the list of tax-defaulted properties, visit the county website at and click on the Treasurer and Tax Collector's office.
