California Highway Patrol responded to 16 collisions and made five DUI arrests in Tuolumne and Calaveras counties during the New Year's holiday.

CHP's Sonora-area office reported 12 accidents and the San Andreas office reported four during the four-day "maximum enforcement period," which began Dec. 28 and continued through New Year's Day.

One Tuolumne County collision resulted in a DUI arrest.

There were no major injuries during the holiday period, CHP said.

CHP also issued numerous citations over the long weekend for offenses such as speeding, mechanical violations, failing to wear seat belts, running stop signs, driving with open containers of alcohol and possession of marijuana.

CHP responded to a total of 776 collisions in Tuolumne County throughout 2012, which is 24 more crashes than in 2011. DUI-related collisions also increased, climbing from 81 to 101.

Calaveras County saw 51 fewer collisions over the past year, with a total of 509, and seven fewer DUI-related collisions, with a total of 57.

DUI arrests were down in both counties last year, dropping from 426 in 2011 to 365 in 2012 in Tuolumne and 243 to 199 in Calaveras.

Tuolumne had one less fatality and Calaveras had one more in 2012 than the previous year, with a total of seven and 10, respectively.
